Mandela is a municipality in the metropolitan city of Rome in the Italian region of Lazio with 911 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is 48 km northeast of Rome .

The place was called Cantalupo Bardella until 1870 .

Mandela is located on a hill between the Licenza and Arrone rivers. It is located on the edge of the Monti Lucretili above the valley of the Aniene . Mandela is a member of the Comunità Montana Valle dell'Aniene .

The neighboring towns are Anticoli Corrado , Cineto Romano , Licenza , Percile , Roccagiovine , Roviano , Saracinesco and Vicovaro .

Mandela is on the A24 , Autostrada dei Parchi from Rome to Teramo , with the Mandela-Vicovaro exit.

The station is in the Mandela-Scalo district on the Rome – Avezzano line .

history

Horace , who owned a villa in the valley of the Licenza, already mentioned the place with the name Pagus Mandela . In the Middle Ages the place came under the name of Cantalupo Bardella into the possession of the Orsini . In 1814 it came to the Del Gallo di Roccagiovine. Julie Bonaparte , daughter of Charles Lucien Bonaparte , who married Alessandro Del Gallo di Roccagiovine, founded a notable salon in the middle of the 19th century, where numerous writers and other artists met.

In 1870 the community again took on the ancient name of Mandela .
