geography
Valmontone is located in the Sacco Valley , between the Alban Mountains and the Monti Prenestini.
history
The place is said to have been founded from Alba Longa and is probably identical to the ancient Labicum . Labicum was destroyed during the fall of the Roman Empire and rebuilt on the more easily defended hill above the Sacco, which gave it its current name.
Vallis Montonis was first mentioned in a document in 1139. 1208 gave Pope Innocent III. the place to his brother Riccardo Conti , Count of Sora with which a heyday began for Valmontone. The place was looted twice in the 16th century. In 1634 Camillo Pamphilj , the nephew of Innocent X., acquired Valmontone as the center of his principality. Of his plan to convert the place into a baroque ideal city, little more was realized than the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj and the neighboring church La Collegiata. In 1843, Gregory XVI. town rights to the place.
During the Second World War , Valmontone was bombed and almost completely destroyed during the advance of the Allies , for no military reason. Only the massive Palazzo Doria Pamphilj was able to withstand and was accommodation for almost the entire local population in the following years.
