Rocca Priora is an Italian commune in the metropolitan city of Rome in the Lazio region with 12,258 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located 29 km southeast of Rome .

Rocca Priora is on the edge of the Alban Mountains and is one of the municipalities of the Castelli Romani .

It is the seat of the Comunità Montana dei Castelli Romani e Prenestini .

history

The medieval town of Rocca Priora was successively owned by the Annibaldi and Savelli families until they sold it to the Camera Apostolica in 1596 because of their debts . Since then it has belonged to the Papal States and since 1870 to the Italian nation-state.

Attractions

  • At Piazza Umberto I, the castle and parish church stand side by side. The Castello Savelli, now serving as the town hall, is a free invention by the architect Virginio Vespignani from 1880 on the ruins of the former castle of the Savelli family with rectangular towers and a two-flight staircase leading to the entrance portal.
  • The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, with its facade and three-aisled interior, is determined by the architecture of the period after the Second World War.
