history
Numerous finds prove that the area of Mazzano was already settled in the time of the Faliskians and Romans. The name Mazzano is said to be derived from the noble Roman family Matius . Mazzano only became documented when Alberich II , Duke of Spoleto, donated the place to the monastery of Santi Andrea e Gregorio in Rome in 945 , where it remained until 1526. It was then bought by the Orsini-Anguillara family, who sold it in 1599 to the later Cardinal Lelio Biscia. After his death in 1638, twenty years later it came to the family of the Marchesi del Drago, who owned the place until the land reform of the Ente Maremma in 1951. Since the award by Pope Gregory XVI. in 1832 they carried the title of Prince of Mazzano.
Since 1872 the municipality has officially been called Mazzano Romano .
