List of Roman families

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of Roman gentile names that correspond to today's family names . They are arranged in alphabetical order and listed in their most common form, some with common subsidiary forms. As far as known and unambiguous, the class allocation ( patrician or plebeian ) of the gens is mentioned; also the time in which the gens is attested (inscribed or historically verifiable), as well as the most important branches ( stirpes ) of the family. Not listed here are those cognomines that did not identify a continuous family branch, but only individual persons. The family names do not include individual and personal names from the imperial era (Christian calendar), which were mostly chosen according to oriental customs.

The five great families of the Roman Republic (around 500 to 30 BC) are marked in bold .
