Flaccus
Flaccus was a cognomen (nickname) that occurred in numerous Roman families ( gentes ). The most common was in the plebeian family Fulvius , which as one of the most distinguished families of the city of Rome is considered. Cicero and Pliny explain that the family originally came from Tusculum , where relatives are said to have lived in the 1st century.
As is customary for nicknames, Flaccus was probably originally a nickname, probably from Marcus Fulvius Flaccus , the founder of the family. Its meaning has been interpreted in different ways, including as big ear , floppy ear or similar.
The most famous bearer of the name today is the poet Horace , Quintus Horatius Flaccus.
