Gaius Nonius Flaccus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gaius Nonius Flaccus (full name form Gaius Nonius Gai filius Velina Flaccus ) was a member of the Roman knighthood ( Eques ) living in the 1st century AD . Individual stations in his career are known through an inscription that is dated to AD 69/79. His career is shown in the inscription in ascending order.

Life

The career of Flaccus described in the inscription began after the death of Claudius (41–54) and ended before the death of Vespasian (69–79). At the beginning he took over the function of a priest ( Flemish ) three times , namely for the deified Augustus , Gaius Iulius Caesar and Claudius ( flamini divi Augusti et divi Iuli et divi Claudi ).

This was followed by his military career, which consisted of the usual tres militiae for a member of the equestrian order . First he served as a tribune in the Legio V Macedonica and then in the Legio VII Claudia , which was stationed in the province of Moesia . He then took over as prefect of the Ala I Pannoniorum , which at that time was probably stationed in the province of Pannonia .

He then returned to his hometown and was three times Duovir quinquennalis ( IIviro quinquennali III ). In addition, he was the prefect and patron of his hometown ( patrono coloniae ).

Origin and family

Flaccus was inscribed in the Tribus Velina and came from Firmum Picenum , today's Fermo , where his gravestone with the inscription was also found. His tombstone was erected by Nonius He [] ; possibly this was his nephew. A relationship with Gaius Salvius Liberalis Nonius Bassus and Lucius Flavius Silva Nonius Bassus is uncertain.
