Publius Valerius Flaccus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Publius Valerius Flaccus was a Roman politician in the years before the Second Punic War .

He came from the Flacci , one of the most important branches of the gens Valeria . His father was consul in 261 BC. BC, he himself reached the consulate in 227 BC. Together with Marcus Atilius Regulus . In 219 BC He belonged with Quintus Baebius Tamphilus to an embassy to Hannibal , which was supposed to insist on the abandonment of the siege of Sagunt . Since Hannibal refused this request, the embassy traveled on to Carthage , where they could not achieve anything either. Flaccus was held in high esteem ( auctoritas ) in the Senate : As 211 BC. When it was feared that Hannibal might march on Rome, he prevailed with his opinion that it should be left to the Roman generals who besieged Capua to decide how many troops they could do without to protect Rome. Nothing more is known about his further life.

Publius Valerius Flaccus , mentioned twice in Livy , is perhaps a son of the same name who died early. It is a legate who, under the command of Marcus Claudius Marcellus in 216 BC. BC fought before Nola . For the second time he was appointed prefect of the fleet ( praefectus classis ) in 215 BC. BC, who succeeded in intercepting the ambassadors who had concluded the treaty between Philip V and Hannibal. In one or both cases, however, the identity with the consul of 227 BC cannot be completely ruled out. Especially after the great losses among members of the nobility in the battle of Cannae , experienced men could also have been deployed again. Flaccus' son Lucius Valerius Flaccus came 195 BC. To the consulate.
