Marcus Hordeonius Flaccus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marcus Hordeonius Flaccus (* before 47; † January 70 AD ) was Roman consul suffect in AD 47 and governor in Germania superior from summer 68 to January 70. He was slain by mutinous Roman soldiers in Novaesium .

After the successful usurpation of Galba in 68, the new emperor installed Hordeonius Flaccus as the successor to Verginius Rufus as governor in Germania superior. Verginius had defeated Gaius Iulius Vindex in the battle of Vesontio Galba's allies . At the time of his governorship, Hordeonius Flaccus was already at an advanced age.

When Hordeonius Flaccus' troops refused to take the oath of loyalty to Galba at the beginning of 69, he did not intervene. He moved quickly to the side of Vitellius , the place of the Rhine troops as the new ruler of Galba acclaimed . When he left for Italy, he entrusted Hordeonius Flaccus with the command of the remaining Rhine army.

During the unrest of the Batavian uprising , Hordeonius came between the fronts, as the Batavians allegedly fought for Vespasian , to which Flaccus tended due to the political situation, while his troops loyal to Vitellius rejected Vespasian. Hordeonius Flaccus was still able to swear his grumbling soldiers in Vespasian. However, at the beginning of January 1970 he was killed by drunken soldiers after he had paid out a donation that Vitellius had promised in the name of Vespasian.
