Messalla

Messalla (also Messala ) was the cognomen of a branch of the Roman family of the Valerians . It was derived from the city of Messana (now Messina ), which Manius Valerius Maximus Corvinus Messalla had successfully defended against the Carthaginians, after which he received the cognomen.
