Scaevola

Scaevola is the cognomen of a branch of the ancient Roman plebeian gens Mucia ; the name means left-hand and comes from the folk hero Gaius Mucius Scaevola , who according to legend in 508 BC. BC sacrificed his right hand in the failed attempt to murder the Etruscan king Lars Porsenna .
