Greece

In Athens , Kleisthenes and Isagoras compete for political influence. Isagoras succeeds in being elected Archon eponymos , and Kleisthenes thereupon, with the support of the people's assembly, begins a reform program aimed at the isonomy of the Attic citizens. In order to prevent this change, Isagoras calls on the Spartans under King Cleomenes I , who now demands that the Athenians banish Kleisthenes and some of his followers. Kleisthenes goes into exile; Cleomenes appears with an army in Athens, drives out 700 families and sets up a council with 300 supporters of Isagoras. This meets with massive resistance from the population, Isagoras, his followers and the Spartans retreat to the Acropolis and are besieged by the other Athenians, then the Spartans and Isagoras leave Attica, Kleisthenes and the 700 exiled families are recalled, Kleisthenes is apparently for appointed as a substitute for the rest of the archon year (which extends into the summer of 507 BC).
