Cethegus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cethegus (also Cetegus , Greek Κέθηγος ) was a Roman cognomen that had been around since the 3rd century BC. . BC is attested. It is the nickname of Cornelii Lentuli , allegedly because the family refused to wear the tunic , but also appears in the Gens Rufia ( Rufius Petronius Nicomachus Cethegus ). The connection between the republican and imperial name-bearers among the Cornelians is unclear.

Cethegus is also attested as a family name in inscriptions.

Cethegus is also the name of a figure from Felix Dahn's historical novel A Battle for Rome . It is based on the historical Rufius Petronius Nicomachus Cethegus . He is depicted as the dominant Roman counter- figure to the kings of the Goths , who wants to play the Goths and Eastern Romans off against each other in order to gain control over Italy himself .
