Gaius Ceionius Rufius Volusianus (* approx. 246/249) was a Roman politician and Praetorian prefect .

Volusianus was clarissimus vir . From 281/283 to 289/291 he was, first under Emperor Carinus , then under Diocletian , Corrector Italiae (governor of Italy). Appointed proconsul of the province of Africa by Emperor Maxentius (305/306?), He - meanwhile appointed Praetorian prefect - together with Zenas put down the usurpation of Domitius Alexander in Africa (309/310). For this he was rewarded by Maxentius with the city prefecture of Rome (310-311) and the consulate for the year 311, which he held together with Aradius Rufinus .

After Maxentius had fallen in battle against his rival Constantine in 312 , Volusianus temporarily lost all honor. However, Constantine finally made him again city prefect (313-315) and consul (314). In 321 he became Praetorian prefect for the second time.

Volusianus was married to Nummia Albina, daughter of Nummius Albinus (consul 263); his son was Ceionius Rufius Albinus (consul 335).

Remarks

  1. PLRE, Vol. 1, p. 977 gives a suffect consulate around 280, but this is probably a mistake, since the inscriptions for Volusianus only give two consulates.
  2. ^ Aurelius Victor , Liber de Caesaribus 40:18; Zosimos 2,14,2.
  3. See, however, Otto Seeck, Ceionius 18 , in: RE, Bd. III, 2, Col. 1859, who considers a Ceionius of the same name to be the city prefect of 310/311, “because [Volusianus] commanded and contributed to Africa at the same time of his Stadtpraefectur in the year 313–315 no iteration is noted in the chronograph of 354 ”.
