Rufius Petronius Nicomachus Cethegus

Rufius Petronius Nicomachus Cethegus was a Roman consul and Patricius .

Cethegus was the son of Petronius Probinus, who had been consul in 489 and Patricius from 511 to 512 . In 504 he became consul without a colleague. From 512 to approx. 558 he was Patricius and later Magister officiorum and chairman of the Senate ( caput senatus ).

During the siege of Rome by Totila in 545, he was accused of treason and withdrew to Constantinople . In the years 552/553 he negotiated for Justinian I with Pope Vigilius . Under Pope Pelagius I (556-561) he returned to Italy and lived in Sicily.

Rufius Petronius Nicomachus Cethegus is the historical model for Cornelius Cethegus Caesarius, one of the protagonists in Felix Dahn's novel A Battle for Rome .
