Tarquitius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tarquitius is the name of a Roman family with Etruscan roots.

etymology

Tarquitius is the Latin equivalent of the Etruscan name tarqu (n) -na , also tarcna or tarχna . The name goes back to the Aegean-Aegean god Tarku, who was assimilated with the immigration of the Etruscans in Italy and became the hero Tarchon of the Etruscan people. Two Roman families derive their names from the original form tarchna : Tarquitius and Tarquinius . Both are documented by the Etruscan grave finds from Caere , whereby the name Tarquitius is found there even more frequently.

The name Tarquitius was regarded by the Romans as a synonym or subsidiary form of Tarquinius, as the example of the Tarquitischen staircase, which Lucius Tarquinius Superbus is said to have built, shows . Tarquitius was also used erroneously, because after the expulsion of the Tarquinians from Rome no members of the family should actually appear in the traditions as in the case of the patrician L. Tarquinius in the 5th century BC. The rider leader under Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus is therefore listed in various sources as L. Tarquitius.
