Nepos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Latin language, Nepos refers to a nephew or grandson in the narrower sense , and in the general sense to all descendants of a person. The name also appears as part of the name of some Roman clans . In the German-speaking world , only the foreign word “nepote”, derived from nepos , plays a role for a younger relative (mostly in politics) , as well as “ nepotism ” (nepotism) derived from it .

A comparable root can already be found in the ancient Indian nápāt and in the ancient Greek άνεψιός ("sibling son, nephew", derived from ά-νεπτιός). In medieval Latin , Nepos denotes every relative of a person, without specifying the degree of relationship . The French adopted the word as neveu (nephew). This was adopted, with mocking overtones, in German colloquial language and used as "Neveu" or "Nevö", a large-scale political campaign in the German Reich until 1914 started against words of French origin.
