Pomponius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pomponius is the family name (nomen gentile) of the Roman gens of Pomponii (feminine form: Pomponia ). The name probably goes back to an old Italian first name Pompo . The Pomponii led him back to a son of the mythical king of Rome, Numa Pompilius .

The plebeian sex first appeared historically in the middle republic in the 3rd century BC BC with the branch of Pomponii Mathones . During the imperial era, several branches of the family repeatedly provided consuls . There were also some literary people in the gens ; best known is Marcus Tullius Cicero's friend Titus Pomponius Atticus .
