Pomponius Gauricus
Pomponius Gauricus , Italian Pomponio Gaurico (* 1481 or 1482 in Gauro, a municipality in the area of Giffoni Valle Piana near Salerno ; † around 1530 ) was an Italian humanist and art theorist of the Renaissance .
From 1501 Gauricus studied together with his brother, the astrologer Luca Gaurico ( Lucas Gauricus ) in Padua . From 1502 he emerged as editor and translator of ancient literature. 1504's several times reprinted in the course of the 16th century Latin translation appeared in Venice's comments and the Ammonius Hermiae the Isagoge of the Neo-Platonist Porphyry , an introduction to Aristotle ' categories . In December of the same year 1504 he published his work De sculptura , in which he reflected the rediscovery of the central perspective in painting, but at the same time also revalued the sculpture that other authors regarded as inferior to painting.
For Gauricus, sculpture is the umbrella term for all visual arts; Gauricus establishes the graphic as a basic scientific process, which is a mandatory prerequisite for the practice of all visual arts (Krech 1989, 51–58).
