Publius Pomponius Secundus

Publius Pomponius Secundus (full name possibly Publius Calvisius Sabinus Pomponius Secundus ) was a Roman senator , general and poet of tragedies in the 1st century during the reigns of Tiberius , Caligula and Claudius .

Life

Pomponius was born around the beginning of the 1st century. In the year 31, after the fall of Sejan , he was accused of being involved in his conspiracy by the former praetor Considius Proculus, but not convicted. In return, Pomponius' brother Quintus obtained the condemnation and execution of Considius in 33 . Publius Pomponius Secundus was apparently released from seven years imprisonment after Caligula's accession to power. He became a suffect consul under Claudius in 44 . In 47 the emperor reprimanded Pomponius being booed in the theater.

A few years later, 50/51, Pomponius was governor of Germania superior . In this position, he led one of Tacitus successful campaign described against the Germanic tribe of the chat , from where after forty years prisoners Varusschlacht were freed. Pomponius received the ornamenta triumphalia for his success .

Pomponius was friends with Pliny the Elder , who also wrote a biography about him, which has now been lost.

In addition to the exemplary personality of Pomponius, Tacitus praised his long-lasting literary fame. Quintilian calls him the best contemporary tragedy writer . However, Pomponius was not undisputed during his lifetime. So he quarreled with Seneca , who also wrote tragedies, over linguistic issues. According to the younger Pliny , he sometimes let the audience decide whether to keep or delete a passage in his plays.

The works of Pomponius have been lost except for a few fragments. Aeneas and Atreus have come down to us as the titles of his tragedies .
