John Cardy

John Lawrence Cardy (born March 19, 1947 in England ) is a British theoretical physicist who is particularly concerned with two-dimensional critical phenomena and percolation in statistical mechanics using conformal field theories .

Life

Cardy studied at Cambridge University , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1968 and his doctorate in 1971. From 1977 he was at the University of California, Santa Barbara . In 1978 he received a research grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellowship ). In 1993 he became professor at the University of Oxford at the Rudolf Peierls Center for Theoretical Physics. He was also at CERN .

A conjecture made by him in 1988 (a-theorem), which generalizes Alexander Zamolodchikov's c-theorem to four dimensions and concerns the irreversibility of the renormalization group of quantum field theories, was proven in 2011 by Zohar Komargodski and Adam Schwimmer .

Cardy has been a Fellow of the Royal Society since 1991 . In 2000 he received the Dirac Medal (IOP) , in 2011 with Édouard Brézin and Alexander Zamolodchikov the Dirac Medal (ICTP) and in 2004 the Lars Onsager Prize . In 2010 he received the Boltzmann Medal . He was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1985.
