- 1279 : After the defeat of China in the sea battle at Yamen against the Mongols , Prime Minister and Imperial Advisor Lu Xiufu drowns himself together with the eight-year-old heir to the throne, Song Bing, and thus ends the Song dynasty . The rule of the Mongols begins under the Yuan Dynasty proclaimed by Kublai Khan .
- 1452 : King Friedrich III. is crowned Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire by Pope Nicholas V in Rome . It is the last imperial coronation in Rome.
- 1563 : In the Edict of Amboise , the Huguenots in France received the limited right to freedom of religion through Caterina de 'Medici . Paris and a few other cities are excluded from the regulation . This ends the First Huguenot War .
- 1616 : Sir Walter Raleigh is released from the Tower of London after thirteen years in prison .
- 1682 : The general assembly of the French clergy promulgates the Gallican articles which emphasize the independence of the French church and the kings of France in relation to the Pope's claim to leadership.
