Wilhelm Ulrich Romanus (born March 19, 1598 in Leipzig ; † September 17, 1627 there ) was a German legal scholar.

Life

Romanus was the son of Franz Romanus (1550–1636) and his wife Margaretha († October 28, 1633), daughter of the Leipzig council Friedrich Ofen von Echt (also Bachofen; † 1593). He was born noble (von Muckershausen) and heir of Brausswig . Like his brother Franz Romanus (1600–1668), he attended the Nikolaischule in Leipzig , he also enjoyed private tuition and, after studying at the University of Leipzig, in 1615 could have received his master's degree. However, since he had found a particular passion for philosophical studies, he preferred to attend the lectures of his father and those of Wilhelm Schmuck .

After he became a baccalaureus in 1624 and a licentiate in law in 1626, he went with his brother Franz to the University of Wittenberg , where he continued his studies with his brother-in-law Bartholomäus Reusner . He would have liked to go on a scholarly trip to other countries with his brother, but the dangers of the Thirty Years' War and the rampant epidemics prevented it. They returned to Leipzig, where he was given the professorship of law with the title of Publ. De Verbor. Signif. et Regul juris and he therefore received his doctorate on July 12, 1626 as a doctor of law. However, before he could give his first lecture, he developed kidney stones, as a result of which his liver was damaged and he died. His body was buried on September 20 in the Paulinerkirche in Leipzig .
