Wilhelm Schmuck (born May 1, 1575 in Suhl , † December 26, 1634 in Leipzig ) was a German legal scholar.

Life

Wilhelm was the son of the Suhl merchant Wendel Schmuck and his wife Margaretha (née Horneiffer). After the death of his father, his brother Johann Schmuck took over the management of the family household. This enabled him to do his first training at the Suhl city school, which at that time was under the direction of Rector Nikolaus Funck. Then he frequented the Princely Henneberg State School in Schleusingen under the rectors Wolfgang Müller and Johann Faber . He left this in 1595 to move to the University of Leipzig , where it had already been deposited in the winter semester of 1591. Supported by his brother Jacob Schmuck and his cousin Vincentius Schmuck , he graduated from the bachelor's degree in philosophy on March 29, 1595 and advanced to a master's degree in philosophical sciences in the winter semester of 1596. Then he began to study law.

For this purpose he went to the University of Wittenberg on January 7, 1599 . At that time, Bartholomäus Reusner , Johann Zanger the Younger and Lucas Beckmann taught law there. On May 6, 1601 he continued his studies at the University of Marburg , among others with Hermann Vultejus . When he returned to Leipzig in 1605, he became an assessor at the law faculty. As such, he took over the rectorate of the Leipzig University on June 23, 1606, in the 1606 summer semester . He was subsequently to exercise this office in the summer semesters of 1612, 1624 and 1628, and from 1608 onwards he was often the dean of the law faculty. After he received his doctorate on May 9, 1611 as a licentiate and on March 30, 1612 as a doctor of law , he received a collegiate at the Leipzig Princes' College in 1614. In 1618 he became a full professor of public law, the Pandekten, and in 1633 received the university honorary post of a "prepositus magnus" as administrator of the Leipzig university villages. As a result of deficiency symptoms, he died of scurvy .
