Vincentius Schmuck (born October 17, 1565 in Schmalkalden , † February 1, 1628 in Leipzig ) was a German Lutheran theologian and hymn poet .

Life

Vincentius was born as the son of the Schmalkalden printer and councilor Michael Schmuck (* 1635 in Suhl; † October 6, 1606 in Schmalkalden) and his first wife Agnes Müller († November 14, 1567 in Schmalkalden), the daughter of the councilor in Schmalkalden Nicolaus Müller, born. He first attended the school in his hometown and on October 6, 1579 switched to the Princely Henneberg State School in Schleusingen . From August 7, 1585 he studied at the University of Leipzig , where he became a Baccalaurus on July 11, 1586 and a master's degree in philosophy on January 25, 1588 . After he became curator of the Paulini College in the same year, the Leipzig council appointed him as a teacher at the Nikolaischule in 1589 , where he took over the position of vice-principal from 1591.

Schmuck also participated in the lectures at the Leipzig University and held private and public discussion events; so he became on March 11, 1592 adjunct of the philosophical faculty. He turned to theological studies. After a short preaching activity in Torgau from 1592, he was elected deacon at the Leipzig Nikolaikirche on February 19, 1593 , rose to archdeacon on May 12, 1594 and in this office experienced many arguments with the Leipzig council. Because he was suspended from his offices in February 1600 after a council election sermon and placed under house arrest. In 1601, however, he was reinstated in his offices.

In 1602 he completed the Baccalaurus degree in theology, on July 7, 1604, he became fourth professor of theology and senior pastor at the Nikolaikirche and a member of the Leipzig consistory . On October 11, 1605, he obtained a licentiate in theology, became a consistorial assessor in the same year and received his doctorate in theology on October 23, 1606 . On August 7, 1607, he rose to the third theological professorship, associated with it at the Great Prince College and Canon in Zeitz . 1611. On March 9, 1614, he moved to the second theological professorship, becoming Decemvir of the Leipzig University and canon in Meissen . His last ascent to the first theological professorship took place on June 30, 1617. Schmuck, who had already administered the provost of the old three villages in 1615 , took over the Leipzig superintendent on August 25, 1617 .

Schmuck was rector of the university in the winter semester of 1620 and also in 1608 (summer-semester), 1612 (winter-semester), 1614 (summer-semester), 1616 (winter-semester), 1620 (Summer-Sem.), 1623 (Winter-Sem.) And 1626 (Summer-Sem.) Dean of the theological faculty.

He died of exhaustion on February 1, 1628 and was buried on February 6 in the St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig. In addition to his theological work, he has also appeared as a hymn poet.

Schmuck married Catharina Reiband in Leipzig on September 3, 1593, the daughter of the Leipzig citizen and scales clerk Christoph Reiband. The marriage had seven sons and four daughters. Two sons and two daughters survived the father. Known by the children are:
