Henning Grosse , Henning Grosse (the elder) and also Henning Grosse (born August 14, 1553 in Halberstadt ; † November 10, 1621 in Leipzig ) was one of the most important booksellers and publishers of his time in Leipzig. He created the first catalog for the Leipzig Fair .

Live and act

Henning Große was sent to Braunschweig as a pupil to be taught by the " vir literatissimus ", principal of the city school, Matthias Bergius (1536–1592). Then he began an apprenticeship with the respected bookseller Konrad König in Leipzig. After completing his apprenticeship, he quickly rose to the position of authorized representative and took over the book trade in 1577 . This remained in the family's possession for 182 years and was taken over in 1759 by the publisher and bookseller Philipp Erasmus Reich , the manager of the Weidmann bookstore .

In 1590, Henning Große was also elected councilor . However, he had given up this office a short time later because he was not ready to sign the visitation articles of 1592 during the time of cryptocalvinism .

From 1580 he also worked as a publisher and in 1585 he published the first book mass catalog : Catalogus novus omnium librorum quinundinis autumnalibus Francofurti ad moenum et Lipsiae Anno XCIIII ... , also called " Catalogus Universalis ", which was published regularly until 1860.

In 1600 he published the Elenchus , a summary of the new publications from 1593-1599, which from then on remained in the exclusive distribution of the Große'schen Verlag until 1759. From then on, Groß was considered the "forefather" of the Leipzig book trade, the roots of the Leipzig Book Fair . He also made numerous book foundations, which mainly benefited spiritual institutions.

In autumn 1621 he was elected mayor of the city of Leipzig, but could no longer take up the post due to a serious illness from which he died a few days later. Henning Große was married twice and had three daughters and four sons, with three of his sons also earning a good reputation as booksellers and publishers.
