Rudolf Schmidt (* February 5. 1875 in Dillingen , district Saarlouis , † October 22. 1943 in Eberswalde ) was a Brandenburg journalist , local historian and regional historian .

Live and act

Rudolf Schmidt settled in Eberswalde in 1903 after training as a bookseller (from 1890 to 1892 in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse ) and after working as an editor . He was editor-in-chief for the Eberswalder Zeitung for 17 years and then for seven years for the Oberbarnimer Kreisblatt . His journalistic work led him to local research. In 1904 he began collecting, sifting through and arranging messages and writings, which he later used for his numerous publications on the regional history of the Brandenburg districts of Oberbarnim , Angermünde and Templinused. By 1940 he had written 57 of his own publications.

In 1904 Rudolf Schmidt founded the Eberswalder Heimatblätter , which were later continued in the regional scientific journal Brandenburg . From 1920 he put together a 16-volume history of this district (home books of the Oberbarnim district) on behalf of the then district administrator of the Oberbarnim district . From 1922 onwards he was responsible for the editorial offices of the Oberbarnimer, Angermünder, Templiner and Niederlausitzer district calendar.

Schmidt's best-known work is the history of the city of Eberswalde in two volumes, which is still considered a reference work today. In Eberswalde, Rudolf Schmidt is highly valued for his pictorial and yet objective description of the city and its surroundings. Unusually for a homeland researcher, Schmidt always made sure to back up his statements with extensive source citations in his works. That is why some of his works are still of scientific value today.

Rudolf Schmidt was a member of the NSDAP . Nevertheless, he did not destroy the approximately 45 historical files from his archive on the history of the Eberswalde synagogue community and wrote in Volume II in Chapter 80 about The Jews in Eberswalde .

Rudolf Schmidt's grave is located in the Eberswalder Waldfriedhof.

Schmidt's estate is now kept in the Potsdam City and State Library and in the Barnim district archive. In addition to books, newspapers and magazines, it also includes a historical map collection, manuscripts, material collections, correspondence and photographs. His private library, which he called Bibliotheca Brandenburgica , is now a separate, closed collection in the Potsdam City and State Library. It contains more than 5,000 books.
