The Potsdam City and State Library (SLB) is one of the largest public libraries in the state of Brandenburg . It has its seat in the education forum of the state capital Potsdam, together with the adult education center Potsdam and the science days . The SLB comprises a stock of over 600,000 items, which are distributed over three branch libraries and one main library. Since its reopening in 2013, it has offered barrier-free access to the open access area and the special collections, as well as a wide range of options for using the Internet.

history

The beginnings

The city library was founded in 1874 as a public library and thus came into being almost 50 years before the state library , which was established in Berlin in 1922 as the central scientific library of the Brandenburg provincial administration. However, in 1939 some parts of the Brandenburg State Library were relocated to Potsdam, which from now on was also charged with securing the holdings and improving the protection of the books. In addition, all publishers were obliged to submit a copy of each of the books and other printed material appearing in their publishers as a specimen copy ( deposit copy ). At this point in time, all of the regional literature became the library's collection area.

The city library from 1945 to 1968

During the air raid on Potsdam on April 14, 1945, the municipal public library was completely destroyed, only the music library remained undamaged. However, this did not bring operations to a standstill. In 1954, the municipal public library became the Potsdam City and District Library (SBB).

From the fall of 1962 which was in the main library open access used their inventories using the system for the general libraries were set up. In addition, a versatile catalog is being set up. Two years later, all SBB facilities received the open access list. In addition, the library began in 1964 to publish numerous bibliographies , selection catalogs and bibliographies .

The state library from 1945 to 1968

After the Brandenburg State University was founded in March 1948, it did not take long before the State Library was given the function of the university library , thus becoming the Brandenburg State and University Library (LHB). A year later, the LHB took over the organization of the central loan system in the state of Brandenburg, which was soon connected to the loan system of the German libraries.

The scientific general library of the Potsdam district

In the decree of the Council of Ministers of the GDR of 1968, the establishment of scientific general libraries (WAB (B)) was recommended in all districts. As a result, the General Scientific Library of the Potsdam District was founded on January 1st, 1969. It should secure the supply of literature to the population by collecting and making available scientific literature, special literature, general educational literature, aesthetic literature, children's and youth literature as well as sound carriers. The opening of the new building on Platz der Einheit did not take place until October 5, 1974.

In 1979, the reorganization of the open access holdings began according to the new binding classification for general libraries (KAB), which is still used in the SLB today.

City and State Library Potsdam

On November 2, 1992, the agreement for the operation of the Potsdam City and State Library was signed by the Lord Mayor of the State Capital Potsdam and the Minister for Science, Research and Culture of the State of Brandenburg.

Electronic cataloging began in 1994, whereupon the electronic catalog Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) was introduced one year later .

Collections

Brandenburgica

The "Brandenburgica" is a collection of publications about the state of Brandenburg and from Brandenburg. But depictions of personalities who were connected to the country in the course of their life and work are also taken into account. Thus it is the important collection on the history of Brandenburg, but at the same time it is universal.

The first collecting activities for this collection were carried out as early as 1922. After the Second World War, however, a phase of rebuilding and consolidation of this collection began, which has been called "Brandenburgica" since 1956. On the one hand, the holdings are to be divided into the borrowable open access holdings and the study and magazine holdings intended for reference use , which make up the largest part. The latter is particularly important due to the collection and archiving of deposit copies (based on the provisions of the Brandenburg State Press Act and subsequent statutory ordinances), but also due to the archiving of purchased media. The approximately 55,000 media units also include the most important sources on the country's history (with valuable and rare editions from the 16th century), but also other monographs and periodicals as well as microforms , maps, videos, slides and CD-ROMs are archived here and continuously updated .

In addition, the holdings are supplemented by collections such as the regional historical literature collection of the Rudolf Schmidt Library (approx. 7,000 volumes) and legacies, which include the reconstructed and processed Potsdam cartography from the years 1317 to 1988 by Hermann Fellien and the legacy of the important Potsdam Conservationist and local historian Friedrich Mielke are added.

Since 1992 the library has also been able to include the oldest printed book in the state of Brandenburg, the Marienpsalter , among its holdings. It is on permanent loan in the House of Brandenburg-Prussian History in Potsdam.

Gottfried Benn Collection

Gottfried Benn collection in the SLB

In 1994, SLB Potsdam received his Gottfried Benn collection, which he had compiled in private, as a donation from Mr. Wüllner. It is the second largest Gottfried Benn collection in Germany. It includes books by and about Gottfried Benn on the one hand , but also annual folders, special folders on the subject of art and music in connection with Benn, posters, pictures as well as records, tapes and a photo collection.

Walter Boehlich estate library

Since 2013, the SLB in cooperation with the Moses Mendelssohn Center for European-Jewish Studies has managed Walter Boehlich's estate library with over 12,000 volumes and is freely accessible to the public.

Historical book holdings

The basis for today's historical book inventory is the book collection of the Brandenburg State Library. These were replaced by stocks of different origins, such as B. the former Graflich zu Lynarsche Fidei-Kommiss library added. It is the most extensive historical universal collection in the state of Brandenburg. The works date from the period from the beginning of book printing to the end of the 19th century. This includes newspapers and magazines, calendars, atlases and maps as well as important encyclopedias such as the Encyclopédie by Diderot (1751 to 1780). In total, this collection comprises around 28,000 volumes.

Brandenburg bibliography

The Brandenburg Bibliography lists literature and other media (maps, CD-ROM, videos, etc.) that deal with the content of the State of Brandenburg and has been available online since 1999. It contains both regional monographs and articles that have appeared in magazines, newspapers, local calendars and yearbooks. Titles published after 1995 and supplements from earlier years are included. Mainly titles from the SLB Potsdam are listed. The titles are usually provided with the signature of the SLB Potsdam and can, provided the conditions of use permit a loan, be ordered through the loan service.

Evidence of the Brandenburg titles up to around the year of publication 1993/1994 is in a conventional card catalog, the special Brandenburgica catalog. This card catalog has been scanned and can now be researched as the Brandenburgica image catalog. However, it is not yet fully available because it is still being processed.
