The German Imperium
- February 5: In his encyclical Quod numquam , Pope Pius IX condemns . the Prussian culture war laws and declares them null and void.
- February 6: In the German Reich , the new Reich Law on the certification of civil status and marriage prescribes compulsory civil marriage and allows divorce.
- April 22nd: The so-called “ Bread Basket Act ” intensifies the culture war with the Roman Catholic Church in the German Empire . The core of the law is the blocking of all state subsidies to ecclesiastical institutions of the Catholic Church in order to force the recognition of the Kulturkampf Laws by the Church. Bishops and clergy who make this acknowledgment in writing will again receive the state benefits.
