Church college
As ecclesiastical universities in the current language colleges are in church sponsorship means both Protestant as Catholic denomination. They are usually state-recognized universities, mostly with a focus on theology , philosophy , social work , nursing science or pedagogy . Catholic universities emerged in the early 19th century as a response to the secularization of higher education, and Protestant universities in the early 20th century.
Church universities (KiHo) in the narrower sense, which also have this name in their name, are or were, however, exclusively Protestant universities in the sponsorship of various regional churches. They emerged from the beginning of the 20th century ( Bethel : 1905), but above all after the end of National Socialism , as training centers for theological and diaconal youngsters that were emphatically remote from the state.
Germany
There are currently 42 state-recognized, church-run universities in Germany , including 13 universities with the right to award doctorates, 21 universities of applied sciences without the right to award doctorates and 8 colleges of art and music.
According to the Federal Statistical Office , around 29,000 students were enrolled at church universities in Germany in 2013 , 73 percent of whom were women. This above-average proportion results from the fact that more than half of the students were enrolled in the field of social affairs , which has more than three-quarters of women. Austria
In Austria, the Catholic Church can set up theological teaching establishments on the basis of Art. 5 § 1 of the Concordat . According to Section 93, Paragraph 1, Item 3 of the Universities Act 2002, graduates of these theological schools can acquire an academic degree which is awarded by a state university. The Philosophical-Theological University of St. Pölten is one of the theological schools .
In contrast to this, the Philosophical-Theological University of Heiligenkreuz was recognized by the state as a university with the right to graduate through an exchange of notes between the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs and the Holy See .
The former theological university in Linz has been accredited according to the University Accreditation Act and is therefore now a private university ( Catholic-Theological Private University Linz ). Before that, too - contrary to what Art. 5 § 1 of the Concordat prescribes - it exercised an independent right to graduate with the consent of the responsible Federal Ministry. This was criticized in canonical publications because there was no legal legal basis.
The Catholic Church has also set up private universities of teacher education . These are subject to the legal provisions applicable to private universities of teacher education.
