Diakonik , Diakoniewwissenschaft or Caritaswissenschaft reflect theologically the practice of Christian diakonia from the regional to the international level. The Greek term diakonia is stronger in the Protestant context, the Latin term Caritasat home in the Catholic context. The subject is diakonia or Caritas as the essential fulfillment of the churches and as an association commitment in the area of tension between church and society. The attempt is made to include both the view of the suffering and the helping person and the specifications of the churches for their respective social-charitable work. Diakonik thinks about the historical, ethical, psychological and pastoral contexts of helping.

The relationship between “ethics and organization”, medical ethics, care ethics, terminal care, and special offers such as the station mission form the broad spectrum of questions. In recent years, the tension between community and association diakonia or Caritas has been the focus of attention in diakonia. Another focus is the given the financial problems of fundraising and motivation of volunteers and volunteers become.

Diakonik or Caritas science has close ties to sociology, social policy, social work and economics, but also to moral and pastoral theology, insofar as they value, obligation and importance of diakonia and Caritas and the work of Caritas in the context of pastoral care and under the Profile of a Christian social work dealt with. Diakonik and Caritas Studies create a theological and ethical foundation for social work and contribute to its motivation and increased efficiency.

One of the founders of Caritaswissenschaft is the theologian, social and economic scientist Heinrich Weber (1888-1946), who, as the successor of Franz Heat, held the chair for Christian social teaching in Münster (Westphalia) from 1922 to 1935 and then again from 1945 to his Death in 1946. After his forced transfer to Breslau, he taught Caritas science at the university there. From 1922 until his death he was the chairman of the Caritas Science committee of the German Caritas Association. He worked out the basic concepts for training and advanced training in Caritas Science. His main work on Caritas Science was a planned two-part systematic publication in several volumes, of which only the first volume of the General Foundation of Caritas Science was published under the title Das Wesen der Caritas in 1938. One of the founding figures is also the moral theologian Franz Keller (1873–1944), who in 1925 was the first holder of the chair at the Institute for Caritas Science at the theological faculty in Freiburg im Breisgau. Heinrich Pompeÿ from the Institute for Caritas Science and Christian Social Work at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg was particularly involved in the realignment of the discipline after the Second Vatican Council . Under his conception, a state-recognized diploma course for Caritas Science was set up at a faculty for Catholic theology (1993), which then also served as a model for other Catholic faculties.
