Research priorities

A particular focus of Körtner's work is medical ethics . He is director of the Institute for Ethics and Law in Medicine at the University of Vienna and works on several committees, including the Scientific Committee for Gene Analysis and Gene Therapy in Humans. He was a member of the Austrian Bioethics Commission at the Federal Chancellery (2001–2013) and the UNESCO World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST) (2006–2009).

Another focus is the areas of hermeneutics and ecumenical theology . Körtner is a co-founder of the Rudolf Bultmann Society for Hermeneutic Theology (chairman 1998–2008). He is co-editor of the Zeitschrift für Evangelische Ethik and the Theologische Rundschau .

Political positions

Körtner repeatedly takes a profiled position on current political issues from the point of view of theologically motivated political ethics.

In September 2019, for example, he reacted to media reports that the EKD wanted to send its own ship to the Mediterranean for sea rescue. In an article in the magazine Zeitzeichen , Körtner criticized the fact that the EKD Council Chairman Heinrich Bedford-Strohm had held a paper folding ship and a poster with the words “Kirche rettet” in the cameras of the media photographers: “So that's the level at which the EKD is In the meantime, complex political questions such as European migration and asylum policy have been discussed. ”In this context, Körtner complained that the EKD had abandoned the decades-long internal consensus not to make politics itself, but only to make politics possible through political statements. With the EKD Sea Rescue, the EKD becomes “an actor in a questionable migration policy”. Such a rescue at sea has nothing to do with the moral obligation in the sense of international maritime law, but amounts to a “policy of open borders”: “Civilian sea rescuers and their supporters by no means justify their actions with the will to save people from immediate mortal danger , but also with the fact that every person has the right to flee or migrate to a country of their choice. Since there is no such right legally, they justify it morally. In fact, rescue from distress at sea becomes a ticket to Europe, and not for the poorest of the poor, but for those who can afford the high costs of smugglers. ”If the EKD operates this form of refugee rescue, it supports, according to Körtner, that The breakup of the EU and the rise of separatist, right-wing populist tendencies in European countries.
