Theodor Wisch

Theodor "Teddy" Wisch (born December 13, 1907 in Wesselburenerkoog , † January 11, 1995 in Norderstedt in Schleswig-Holstein ) was SS Brigadefuhrer and Major General of the Waffen SS .

Life

He was born the son of a farmer and graduated as a qualified farmer. In 1930 he joined the SS (membership number 4,759) and the NSDAP (membership number 369,050). Here he initially belonged to the 1st storm spell of the 53rd SS standard "Dithmarschen". From there he switched to SS-Oberscharführer and SS-Sonderkommando "Berlin", from which the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler ("LSSAH") was later to be developed. On July 28, 1933, he was promoted to SS-Untersturmführer (equivalent to a lieutenant ).

As SS-Hauptsturmführer and chief of the 1./ "LSSAH" he took part in the attack on Poland , after which he was promoted to SS-Sturmbannführer on January 30, 1940 . As commander of the 2nd Battalion of the Infantry Regiment "LSSAH" he took part in the campaign in the west and in the fighting in the Balkans . From June 1941 he fought in Russia, where in the summer of 1941 he was able to detach a trapped motorcycle rifle battalion. For this he received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on September 15, 1941 . In autumn 1942 he became commander of the 2nd SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment and on January 30, 1943 he was promoted to SS-Standartenführer . For personal bravery in the battles for Kharkov he was awarded the German Cross in Gold on February 25, 1943. Promoted to SS-Oberführer on July 1, 1943 , he became commander of the 1st SS Panzer Division "LSSAH" at the end of July 1943. In September 1943 members of the 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler murdered 50 Jews in the massacre on Lake Maggiore . In the fighting in the winter of 1943/44 near Zhitomir, Korosten and Berditschew, the division suffered heavy losses, but was able to achieve some defensive successes, for which Wisch on February 12, 1944 as SS Brigadefuhrer and Major General of the Waffen SS with the oak leaves to the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded. After the division with the 1st Panzer Army near Cherkassy was encircled by the Korsun-Shevchenkovsk operation of the Red Army, the division was reorganized in France and deployed on the French invasion front from June 1944. In the Falaise pocket , Wisch was wounded in both legs and had to give up command of the division. On August 30, 1944, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves for his leadership services. He was in a military hospital until the end of the war, then was taken prisoner by the British and was released in 1948.
