Order of the Crown of Romania
The Order of the Crown of Romania was founded on March 14, 1881 by statute of May 10, 1881 by King Carol I in memory of the elevation of Romania to a kingdom . It was awarded until the end of the monarchy in 1947 and is now the private house order of the Romanian Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen .
Order classes
The order had five classes and the number of holders of each level was limited:
- Grand Cross (25)
- Grand Officer (80)
- Commander (150)
- Officer (300)
- Knights in unlimited numbers
Order decoration
The medal of the model from 1881 is a dark red enameled, eight-pointed St. John's Cross with a border in gold and white. The initials C (Carol) of the founder can be seen in the cross angles . The medallion in the middle of the cross shows the royal crown on a dark red background. The medallion is surrounded by a gold-rimmed white circlet with the inscription PRIN NOI INSINE (By ourselves) and the date of foundation MARTIE 14, 1881 . On the back of the cross is the day of the statute in the medallion and the year 1866 (referendum), 1877 (complete independence) and 1881 (Carol I proclaimed King of Romania) in the circlet.
The order could also be awarded with swords for military merits.
Ribbon and way of wearing
The ribbon is light blue with two silver stripes.
Grand crosses carried the ribbon over the right shoulder to the left hip. Grand officers and commanders wore the decoration around their necks . Knights and officers carried it on their left breast. For the two higher classes, a silver medal star was provided on the left side of the chest. The breast star resembled a silver bundle of eight rays and bore the medal of the order on the grand cross and the medallion of the obverse on the grand officers , surrounded by four royal crowns from 1932 onwards.
