Kurt-Gerhard Klietmann was the son of Lieutenant Colonel Erich Klietmann and his wife Else, nee. Reuter. In 1931 he passed his Abitur in Berlin and then studied archeology , history and historical auxiliary sciences at the Friedrich Wilhelms University there .

From 1935 to 1939 he worked at the Pergamon Museum , the Zeughaus Berlin and the Märkisches Museum . In 1939 he was with the dissertation The Pilum in the armament of the Roman army of Polybius to the 2nd century Dr. phil. PhD. During World War II he was deployed on the Eastern Front, where he was wounded twice.

In 1943 he published an essay on Mongolia for the German Society for Defense Policy and Defense Sciences , and in 1941 and 1942 he edited two works by the Prussian military theorist Carl von Clausewitz .

In 1946 he married Annelise Paetzhold, divorced Faupel.

After the war he set up his private "Institute for Scientific Order Studies" in Berlin and was its director from 1962 until his death. Together with Ottfried Neubecker , he wrote the order lexicon on behalf of the International Society for Scientific Order Studies, which became known as the standard work "Klietmann-Neubecker". Klietmann was a member of the Herold Berlin Association and the Heraldic-Genealogical Society "Adler" Vienna.

The Herold Association has been keeping the Klietmann Collection of the Institute for Scientific Order Studies in its holdings since 1991.

From 1951 to 1957 he was editor of the Archive for Ordenskunde , from 1958 to 1960 he was editor of Ordenskunde, contributions to the history of the awards , which he edited until 1983. From 1956 he was editor of the magazine Das Ritterkreuz , the bulletin of the order community of knight cross bearers .

As a guest of the "War History" section of the SS Veterans Organization, Klietmann gave a lecture at the 11th Federal Conference of the HIAG in 1964 about the status of the indexing and transmission of SS files. He advocated the participation of SS veterans in the history of the Waffen-SS : “It is up to them to erect a monument [like Homer's ' Iliad and Odyssey ' or Caesar's ' De bello Gallico '] for their troops. ” According to historian Martin Cüppers, Klietmann's documentation Die Waffen-SS , published in 1965 by the publishing house of the HIAG magazine“ Der Freiwillige ”, lacks any criticism of the Waffen-SS and the actions of the individual SS units.
