The heraldic-genealogical society "ADLER" (short name: "Adler" ) in Vienna is a society that is dedicated to family research and heraldry .

history

Genealogical paperback of the noble houses of Austria (1905)

Founded on May 10, 1870 in what was then Austria-Hungary , the association is the second oldest genealogical-heraldic association in Europe after the Herold in Berlin. The initiators in 1870 were mainly aristocrats and members of the emerging Austro-Hungarian bourgeoisie . Genealogy , heraldry and sphragistics of the Austrian nobility were at the center of the activities of the "Adler", which very soon became one of the most respected societies dealing with historical auxiliary sciences. This can also be seen in the old library holdings and collections.

In cooperation with Otto Maaß 'Söhne Verlag, the association initiated the “ Genealogical Pocket Book of Austria's Noble Houses ”, which was published from 1905 to 1913 and is still considered an important work.

After the collapse of the monarchy in 1918, non-members - both scientists and laypeople - began to offer support services for relevant research. Austria , which had become small, looked for the sources for its history in the context of the former monarchy. The “eagle” with its intact library holdings was extremely useful for this. Between 1925 and 1938, the society, under the leadership of President Anton von Pantz, made a significant contribution to scientifically establishing heraldic-genealogical research in specialist circles and the general public.

In 1938 the National Socialist regime was forced to subordinate the society to the " Association for Family Research " in Berlin and was almost exclusively occupied with the creation of ancestral passports for the " Aryan proof ".

After the end of the Second World War , the "Adler" was restored on July 22, 1946 under its old name. After the withdrawal of the Allied occupying powers , it was possible in 1956 to rent rooms in the former Palais Pálffy - Vienna I, Wallnerstrasse 6 / corner of Haarhof 4a - which housed the general administrative archive. This is the department of the Austrian State Archives that also stores the aristocratic archives and other holdings that are indispensable for the relevant work of the members of the society. The library, which had been relocated several times, also found its new place here, but very soon it suffered from a lack of space, since the number of books listed had increased fivefold since 1918. In 1999 the society moved its library and collections to the 9th district, Universitätsstrasse 6 / 9b, near the main building of the University of Vienna with some historical institutes. Not far away are the other historical and art-historical institutes on the university campus (the grounds of the former general hospital). Even today, the students at the "Institute for Austrian Historical Research" at the University of Vienna are made aware of the large special library of the "Adler" society.

The Heraldic-Genealogical Society "Adler" had around 700 members in 2010. Lorenz Mikoletzky is currently the President.
