Krahl was born the son of a shoemaker in Dresden. From 1841 to 1846 he studied surgery and obstetrics at the University of Vienna , in 1847 he graduated with a master's degree in surgery and took a position as a general practitioner in Stetten . According to other sources, he became a surgeon in neighboring Bisamberg . In 1848 he married Barbara Kolarz, the widow of the court coat of arms painter Josef Stein, took over his business and gave up his medical position.

He was a court coat of arms painter, coat of arms censor and chancellery coat of arms painter of the Royal Hungarian Ministry on Allerh. Court camp in Vienna. He collected valuable heraldic originals, documents, art objects and created a coat of arms catalog with 150,000 entries.

Krahl was a member of the central committee of the Austrian Tourist Club and its librarian. Together with Anton von Ruthner and Hans Hauenschild , he played a major role in the development of the Dead Mountains . In 1875, he had a natural rock cave below the Brotfallscharte fitted with cladding including a door, as well as benches and mattresses, and it was designed as the first mountaineering accommodation on the climb to the Großer Priel . The small refuge, built in 1884 on the Obere Polsteralm, was named after him, the Karl Krahl refuge. It was the forerunner of the Prielschutzhaus .
