Anton Ruthner , from August 12, 1853: Anton Edler von Ruthner , (born September 21, 1817 in Vienna , † December 16, 1897 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian mountaineer , alpine researcher, geographer and alpine writer.

Life

He was a lawyer by profession ( Dr. iur. , University of Vienna in 1841 ), but has become known as a mountaineer and alpine writer. He climbed many of Austria's highest Alpine peaks, including some for the first time. He was a member of a large group that climbed the Großvenediger for the first time on September 3, 1841 . Ruthner was the first, as a pioneer of mountaineering and high tourism, to research the mountain world of the Austrian Alps and to describe it appropriately.

Together with Paul Grohmann , Friedrich Simony , Edmund von Mojsisovics , Johann Josef Peyritsch and Guido von Sommaruga (1842–1895), he was one of the founding members of the Austrian Alpine Club (founded on November 19, 1862), of which he was a member of the board until 1870.

Ruthner, who climbed or crossed well over 300 high peaks and passes in the Eastern Alps , was, among other things, a member of the Austrian Geographical Society , an external member of the Berlin Geography Society and a member of the Swiss Alpine Club .

Anton Edler von Ruthner died after a long illness on December 16, 1897 in St.-Johanns-Spital , Salzburg; he was buried in a personal grave on the 20th of the month in the Salzburg municipal cemetery.
