The Rieserferner Group (Italian: Gruppo delle Vedrette di Ries ) is a mountain group in the central Eastern Alps . Together with the Ankogel Group , Goldberg Group , Glockner Group , Schober Group , Kreuzeck Group , Granatspitz Group , Venediger Group and the Villgraten Mountains , it is part of the Hohe Tauern . The Rieserferner Group extends over the Austrian state of Tyrol and the Italian province of South Tyrol . Most of the mountains are in South Tyrol, where they are almost entirely protected in the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park . Of the East Tyrolean parts, significant areas belong to the Hohe Tauern National Park .

The Rieserferner group forms the most south-westerly part of the Hohe Tauern, its foothills extend in the south-west to Bruneck in the Puster Valley . The mountain range takes its name from the Rieserferner , a glacier on the northern flank between Hochgall (highest peak with 3436  m slm ) and Schneebigem Nock ( 3358  m slm ).

Compared to other mountain groups, the Rieserferner group is only small in size. However, it is popular with mountaineers and hikers due to its distinctive and steep, partly glaciated peaks.

Neighboring mountains

The Rieserferner Group borders the following other mountain groups in the Alps:

Boundary

In the north, the Klammljoch forms the border. To the east, the border goes from there along the Arvental Bach over the Jagdhausalm to the confluence with the Schwarzach . To the west, the border runs from the Klammljoch along the Klammlbach to the confluence with the Knuttenbach. In the east, the border runs along the Schwarzach to the confluence of the Staller Almbach. In the southeast and south, the border runs along the Staller Almbach to the Staller Sattel . From there it goes along the Antholz Valley to Olang in the Puster Valley and downstream along the Rienza to Bruneck . In the west the border is formed by the Tauferer Tal and the Reintal . It continues in the Knuttental to the confluence of the Klammbach.

The Klammljoch connects the Rieserferner group with the Venediger group. The Staller Saddle provides the connection to the Villgraten mountains.

geology

From a geological point of view, the middle part of the Rieserferner Group consists of tonalite , an intermediate igneous crystalline rock that is in the form of a plutonite . This plutonite arches and breaks through a central alpine crystalline inflow , which extends between the Tauern window and the periadriatic seam in an east-west direction and consists of Variscan gneiss (e.g. the eye gneiss from Sand in Taufers ), mica schists and pegmatites (this as the old roof The upper eastern alpine rocks designated are still relictively west of the Schneebigen Nock and the Rieserfernerhütte). The gneisses had already been amphibolite facially metamorphosed during the Variscan mountain formation and were then re-folded and reformed during the Alpid mountain formation .

Towards the end of the Alpid mountain formation, about 30 million years ago, the Rieserferner plutonite, like other periadriatics , arose from a melt at great depths and rose up to about 15 kilometers. Uncovered by erosion of the overlying crystalline, it now forms the central area of the Rieserferner Group. The rock consists of tonalite, granodiorite , diorite and rare quartz diorite . The minerals plagioclase , alkali feldspar , quartz , biotite and hornblende are the main components of the so-called Rieserferner granite . Hochgall, Wildgall, the neighboring lean stones and the mountains at the Neue Barmer Hütte are built from this stone. The Schneebige Nock in the west, on the other hand, consists of pre-alpine dark gneiss of the roof area. The heat of the rising magma body also changed the surrounding gneisses, creating garnet crystals , andalusite and numerous dike rocks . A side intrusion of the Rieserferner plutonite rose in the south, west of Antholz , as the Zinsnock pluton . It is possibly connected to the main body and is separated from the Rieserferner Pluton above ground by overlying rock in the area of the Black Wall .

In the Rieserferner group there are about 30 points over 3000 m. The most famous and important peaks are:

Huts

There are 3 Alpine Club huts in the Rieserferner Group.

  • Kasseler Hütte / Hochgallhütte: Altitude: 2274  m slm , open in summer from early June to early October, in winter from mid-March to early May, if several people call, 45 beds, 25 mattress dormitories, valley location: Sand in Taufers , walking time from Rein in Taufers : 2¼ hours
  • Rieserfernerhütte : Altitude: 2792  m slm , managed from the beginning of July to the beginning of October, 20 beds, 20 mattress dormitories, winter room with 20 dormitories open and accessible without an AV key, valley location: Rasen-Antholz , walking time from Antholz: 3½ hours, walking time from Rein : 4 hours - path no. 3 through the Geltal
