The Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park ( Parco Naturale Vedrette di Ries-Aurina in Italian ) is a regional park in north-east South Tyrol in Italy . It extends over areas of the Rieserferner Group , the Venediger Group and the Zillertal Alps . It was founded in 1988 and covers an area of ​​31,320 ha, divided into the communities of Ahrntal , Gais , Percha , Prettau , Rasen-Antholz and Sand in Taufers .

Expansion and habitats

The park stretches across extensive high mountain landscapes. The southern half comprises the entire South Tyrolean part of the Rieserferngruppe between Antholz , Taufers and Rein . The northern half extends over the South Tyrolean parts of the Venediger group including the entire Durreck group and extends in the upper Ahrntal to the Zillertal main ridge in the area of ​​the Krimmler Tauern . Beyond the state border with Austria in the east is the Hohe Tauern National Park .

From a geological point of view, the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park is particularly interesting because of the Tauern window that is emerging . The park is characterized by its abundance of water, which is expressed in the presence of numerous mountain streams and lakes, including Lake Anterselva. The high valleys of the park are framed by mixed coniferous forests , above the tree line there are alpine grass communities and pastures . A large part of the nature reserve consists of barely overgrown rocks and rubble heaps . There are some glaciers on the northern slopes, including the eponymous Rieserferner on the Schneebigen Nock . Among the numerous peaks that exceed the 3000 m mark, the Dreiherrnspitze ( 3499  m ), the Rötspitze ( 3496  m ) and the Hochgall ( 3436  m ) stand out.

History and facilities

The Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park was founded in 1988, making it the youngest nature park in South Tyrol. The "Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park House" (location: ⊙ ) is located in Campo Tures and provides information on nature, the landscape and the history of the nature park region.
