Green Arrow

" Green arrow " in the green light of a traffic light system

The green arrow in the lens of the green traffic light regulates the flow of traffic from vehicles at intersections and junctions.

Sign 720: green arrow

The “green arrow” should not be confused with the green arrow , an arrow pointing to the right on a small sheet of metal to the right of the red light of the signaling device (in Germany: Section 37 (2) no. 1 sub-paragraph 8 StVO , sign 720).

Germany

In Germany, the green arrow means that traffic is "only released in the direction of the arrow [...]".

According to the administrative regulation on road traffic regulations , “as long as a green arrow is shown, [...] no other traffic flow that crosses the one directed by the arrow may have green; also may pedestrians crossing the guided traffic flow in the vicinity will not be given by marking a pedestrian crossing priority ". With so this green arrow is a conflict-free drive (depending on the direction of the arrow: left, straight, right, or in the directions of the combination of the arrow) via signals the junction. Black arrows on a green background must not be used in order to reduce the risk of confusion with a green solid target. A general red light does not apply to the traffic for which a green arrow is shown.

After the intersection, a green arrow pointing to the left can be shown as a clearing arrow if the release at the main signal took place via a solid disc. This signals that a turning road user can clear the junction without conflict, for example, does not have to give priority to oncoming traffic because it is no longer released. Clearance arrows do not relieve you from paying attention to the main signal beforehand.

Switzerland

In Switzerland , the Signaling Ordinance (SSV) states in relation to the regulation with the green arrow in Art. 71, Paragraph 3: “Light signals must prevent vehicles coming from different directions, with the exception of left-turners with oncoming traffic. If the journey is cleared by green arrows without a yellow flashing light (Art. 68 Para. 3), the collision of turning vehicles with pedestrians in the cross street and left-turns with oncoming traffic must also be excluded. "

Oncoming traffic and parallel pedestrians can be released in Switzerland despite the green arrow. In this case, however, a yellow flashing light (without a symbol) must be displayed next to the green chamber. To this end, the SSV states in Art. 68, Paragraph 3: “Green arrows allow traffic in the direction indicated. If a yellow light flashes next to it at the same time, vehicles turning off must give way to oncoming traffic (Art. 36 Para. 3 SVG) and pedestrians or users of vehicle-like devices on the cross street (Art. 6 Para. 2 VRV) .5 ". The flashing light removes the meaning “without conflict” of the arrows shown alone (left, right or combination arrows with straight ahead) and gives the situation the traffic law meaning “with conflict”. An arrow green with a blinker corresponds to the legal meaning of a full green, but with the restriction that you can only drive in the direction indicated. Straight arrow with indicator is generally not provided in the event of a conflict with the opposite left turn; A full disk should be attached here, possibly with the “arrow straight ahead” sign. The hazard warning lights must be monitored; a failure of the chamber switches the LSA to the OFF state.
