The Texel Group Nature Park ( Parco Naturale Gruppo di Tessa in Italian ) is the largest regional park in the Italian province of Bolzano - South Tyrol and is almost entirely located in the Ötztal Alps . It was founded in 1976 and covers an area of 31,391 ha, divided into the municipalities of Algund , Moos in Passeier , Naturns , Partschins , Riffian , Schnals , St. Martin in Passeier and Tyrol .

Expansion and habitats

The core of the nature park is the Texel Group , which is bordered in the south by the Merano Basin and the Vinschgau , in the east by Passeier , in the north by Pfelders and Pfossental , and in the west by Schnals . The nature park also includes extensive landscapes north of the Texel Group on the main Alpine ridge , which also bears the state border with Austria , namely the South Tyrolean parts of the Schnals ridge between the Hochwilden and the Fineilspitze and the Gurgler ridge between the Hochwilden and the Timmelsjoch . On the Timmelsjoch, a small part of it protrudes into the Stubai Alps .

Due to the large extent of the nature park and the variety of altitude, there are numerous types of vegetation. The sun-exposed, dry southern slopes of the Texel Group can, for example, have steppe vegetation and mixed deciduous forests . The sunny areas facing Schnals are characterized by larch forests , the more rainy and slightly cooler areas towards Passeier by spruce trees . Above the tree line (around 1900  m ) and the shrub line, alpine grass communities cover the slopes, some of which are used as pastures . In the barren high mountain landscapes made up of central Alpine rock there are around twenty lakes, including the Spronser lakes . The nature park, which is characterized by numerous mountains over 3,000  m high, also includes a number of glaciers, especially in the area of the Ötztal main ridge. There, the Hinteren Schwärze ( 3624  m ) also rises, the highest peak in the entire nature reserve.

History and facilities

The nature park was founded in 1976. In 1984 the “Nature Park House Texel Group” was built in Naturns (location: ), which provides information about the diverse habitats in the nature park. The nature park information point is located in the “Bunker Mooseum” near Moos in Passeier (location: ).
