The Tschigat , also Tschigot ( Italian Cigot, Gigot or Giogo di Tessa ) is a 2998  m slm high mountain in South Tyrol , Italy . According to other sources, however, it reaches the three-thousand-meter mark with exactly 3000  m .

Location and surroundings

The Tschigat is located in the southern Texel Group , a mountain group of the Ötztal Alps , north-west above Merano . To the south, the mountain drops steeply about 2700 meters over the Sonnenberg to Partschins and Algund in the lower Vinschgau and Burggrafenamt . To the east, the ridge continues over the 2441  m high Hochgangschartl to the 2625  m high Spronser Rötelspitze . In the northeast, the Spronser Lakes extend in the upper Spronser Valley . To the northeast, a ridge runs to the 2707  m high Milchseescharte , in the north lies a wide mountain valley called Andelsboden above the Lazins valley . There are also some permanent firn fields here , which have lost a lot of size due to the glacier retreat . To the northwest, the Tschigat sends a pronounced ridge to the Halsljoch ( 2808  m ), which separates the Tschigat from the 3,037  m high Lazinser Rötelspitze . To the west are the Tablander Lacken ( 2649  m ) above the target valley . The 2834  m high Stacklwand is in front of the Tschigat in the south- west. The mountain is part of the Texel Group Nature Park .

Bases and paths

The Tschigat seen from the west

The most important base for the ascent of Tschigat is the west of the mountain in Zieltal at 2,259  m located Lodnerhütte ( Rifugio Cima Fiammante ). Below the Lodnerhütte is another refuge, the Nassereither Hütte ( 1523  m ). To the north of the Lazinser Tal is the Lazinser Alm at 1860  m . The bases in the northeast are the Gasthof Oberkaser (2131 m) and the Bockerhütte (1700 m). To the southeast is the high-rise building ( Rifugio Casa Valico ) at 1839  m . Only about one kilometer northeast of the summit is the Guido Lammer bivouac ( 2707  m ), a bivouac box .

The Tschigat is considered a good panoramic mountain and is frequently visited. It was climbed early on by locals, Ludwig Purtscheller made his first tourist ascent on April 3, 1893. He climbed the Tschigat over the northwest ridge, which is still considered a normal route today. In about an hour this path leads to the summit, partially insured, with difficulty II . The way through the east wall (also II) is insured. Further climbs lead from the north (II) or from the Halsljoch over the northeast ridge (III) to the summit.

In winter, the Tschigat can also be climbed as a ski tour . The route leads from the Lazinsalm over the Andelsboden and the northern flank.
