Hanspaul Menara (* 1945 in Sterzing ) is a South Tyrolean hiker, regional historian, publicist and photographer. He gained fame through his numerous hiking guides who deal with his homeland South Tyrol.

Life

Menara was born in Sterzing and gained her first mountain experiences as a child on the Rosskopf and the Telfer Weißen . At the age of 16 he climbed his first three-thousand-meter peak, the Hochfeiler . Through his hobby - mountain and nature photography - he came into contact with the Athesia publishing house, which used some of Menara's works for a calendar. In 1970 he suggested to Athesia to create an overview work on the subject of South Tyrolean lakes. The publisher showed interest and referred him to Josef Rampold , with whom he subsequently hiked, measured and photographed selected lakes and wrote the book South Tyrolean Mountain Lakes . This first joint work was followed by numerous other illustrated books and hiking guides, which soon enabled the employee of the South Tyrolean Forest Inspectorate to start a life as a full-time writer.

Menara, who has hiked and described all of South Tyrol over the years, is considered one of the best experts and most widely read authors in the country. By 2015 he had published a total of around 820,000 copies of 64 books, some of which had been translated into Italian and English , as well as well over 1,000 articles in newspapers and journals. A characteristic of Menara's publications is that he also includes information about local features, cultural assets, legends and history, flora and fauna as well as place and field names in his directions. The publications are illustrated with their own work, which comes from the private archive , which contains around 100,000 slides and 50,000 photos.

Menara's weekly hiking tips in the high-circulation television magazine Dolomiten Magazin , in which he has been proposing a seasonal tour since 1985, are collected with great pleasure and ensure that the trails described last are very popular. Some of his books are considered standard works on local history and have been reissued regularly for decades. In recognition of his lively publication activity, Menara was awarded the Certificate of Honor of the South Tyrolean Provincial Government in 1988 and the Cross of Merit of the State of Tyrol in 2005, and in 2008 he was awarded honorary membership of the South Tyrol Alpine Association .
