Legio I Valentiniana

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Legio I Valentiniana was a legion of the late ancient Roman army.

The sister legions I Valentiniana and II Valentiniana were probably raised by Valentinian I (364-375). It is less likely that these are older, renamed units. A list by the minor Valentinian II. (375-392) is possible, but unlikely, since he ruled the west of the empire under tutelage. It would also be possible to rename the units of the usurper Magnus Maximus (383–388) after his death.

The Legio prima Valentiniana was still stationed in Koptos (Egypt) in the early 5th century and was under the command of the Dux Thebaidos .
