Legio V Iovia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Legio V Iovia was set up to protect the province of Pannonia secunda

The Legio V Iovia was a legion of the late ancient Roman army that was set up together with the Legio VI Herculia by Diocletian towards the end of the 3rd century AD. The name of the Legion refers to Diocletian's nickname Iovius (adjective to Iuppiter ). The Legion's emblem has not survived.

Both legions were stationed in the new province of Pannonia secunda , which was created by the division of Pannonia inferior . Initially stationed in Fort Bononia ( Vidin , northeast Bulgaria) on the Pannonian Limes and later also in Fort Onagrinum , it was the task of the Legion to protect the important residential town of Sirmium .

The legion was probably a pure border legion ( Limitanei ), which did not give up any vexillations to the field army ( Comitatenses ).

In the early 5th century, the Quinta Iovia was under the command of the Dux Pannoniae secundae ripariensis et Saviae . Five cohorts , the main power of the Legion, were stationed under a Praefectus in Bononia. Another Praefectus commanded another part of the legion in Fort Burgenae , while in Fort Onagrinum a third Praefectus was in command of a unit made up of Quinta Iovia and Sexta Herculea .

The Legion left no inscriptions. The "protector ex n (umero) Iov (ianorum)" Flavius Sanctus can not be assigned to the Legio V Iovia .
