Legio I Pontica

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Legio I Pontica was a legion of the Roman army. The legion symbol is unknown.

The Legion was set up by Diocletian (284-305) at the beginning of his reign. In 288 she was stationed in Kolybrassos under her praefectus legionis Aurelius Victor in order to pacify the region together with the Isaurian legions. In 297 the Legion was stationed in the newly created province of Pontus Polemoniacus in Trabzon , where it probably replaced a vexillation of the Legio XV Apollinaris . Here their task was to protect the coastal areas from looting by pirate Goths and Borani .

In the early 5th century the praefectus legionis primae Ponticae was stationed in Trapezunta under the command of the Dux Armeniae .
