Legio XII Gemina

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Legio XII Gemina ( Latin geminus "double") was a legion of the Roman army that was raised by Emperor Tiberius in 24 AD.

Surname

The Legio XII Gemina was a combination of two legions, so to speak a double legion, and it was also an epithet ( Greek "addition") to the 10th Legion from Spain .

history

15 years after the Varus Battle , Tiberius now wanted to secure the border to free Germania. The Legio Gemina was planned from the beginning to monitor the border between the Roman provinces of Raetia and Germania superior , in particular to secure the Limes . She was stationed there for 50 years and successfully defended the border against attacks by the Teutons .

Emperor Vespasian then moved the legion further south in AD 74 to the province of Pannonia , where it remained until its dissolution in late antiquity . Pannonia was ceded to Attila in 433 AD . The exact time of the dissolution is not known.
