Legio V Urbana

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Legio V Urbana was a legion of the Roman army that was founded in 43 BC. BC by the consul Gaius Vibius Panza Caetronianus for the Senate party to fight in the civil war against the Caesarians under Mark Antony .

In contrast to the other newly created senatorial legions (Legio I, Legio II Sabina , Legio III and Legio IIII Sorana ), Legio V Urbana did not move out, but was held back to protect the Urbs (city) of Rome , from which its name Urbana derives derives.

It existed until 31 BC. BC and after the Battle of Actium probably merged with the Legio V Macedonica . The veterans of the Legio V Urbana were settled in Ateste (now Este ) in northern Italy.
