Legio IIII Sorana

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Legio IIII Sorana was a legion of the Roman army that formed in 43 BC. BC by the consul Gaius Vibius Panza Caetronianus for the Senate party to fight in the civil war against the Caesarians under Mark Antony .

The Legio IIII Sorana was relocated to Sora during the second triumvirate (43–32 BC), perhaps after the Battle of Philippi (42 BC) , where the veterans represented the majority of the population. Presumably the Legion got its name Sorana only in this context. According to another view, the name already indicates an excavation in Sora. Members of the Legion, such as the Primus Pilus and Tribunus militum Lucius Firmius, continued their cursus honorum in a civilian career.

The Legio IIII Scythica may have emerged from the Legio IIII Sorana , but this theory is controversial.
